Visual/Written Combinations
Choose one of the assignments below. You have the opportunity to display your understanding of the novel through visual imagery and/or original artwork. The best projects will clearly show thought and creativity, as well as a clear explanation of why those particular images were chosen. You must also provide some written material to supplement your art.

1. Choose either Amy or Joe, and show how he or she is influenced by the ideas and stereotypes of others. Using a combination of images and words, creatively show who this person truly is as well as who others assume/expect them to be.

2. Create an illustration of a central theme in Swallowing Stones. The may be either original artwork or a collage of some sort. On a separate sheet, write at least five paragraphs stating your theme, why you chose that particular theme, and how it is represented by your artwork.

3. Create a newspaper or magazine which includes stories and images to compare the manslaughter case of Michael MacKenzie to that of former New Jersey Nets star Jayson Williams. Using credible sources (newspapers, magazines, web sites – DO NOT use wikipedia), research Williams’ case, which mirrors Michael’s. You may use all of or parts of actual stories for Williams, but obviously you will need to write the stories about Michael. Be sure to include your thoughts on the issue of gun ownership and usage (Second Amendment), your thoughts on what punishment should have been given out, and your analysis of the actual outcomes.

Written Assignments
Choose one of the assignments below. In a well-organized, clearly written paper, fully answer the question, using specific examples from the text to back up your analysis. Papers should be two (2) pages in length, and double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman font.

1. We have discussed the meaning of the title, Swallowing Stones. This applies to several storylines within the book. Choose three instances where a stone needed to be swallowed by one of the characters. Explain how this impacted their lives, what led them to eventually overcome the obstacle, and how it helped them move forward with their lives.

2. Write an additional chapter, which consists of Jenna waking at the Ghost Tree to find Michael sitting there, holding the rifle. Include descriptions of how they feel, what they think and what they say to each other. You must include dialogue in proper format.
